PHPChat is not the only script with incompatibility problems (I had problems with WAPmail as well). May I ask you is there some detailed description about or some 4.x compatibility notes available? There is a possibility that the problem is caused by a bug in PHP, of course, but you'd need to verify what the bug was before submitting a report on it.
