You should NOT comment any lines in sources.
Please try with PHP 4.0.6, (released tomorrow) as this
is fixed in it.

i have some problem in compilation with gd (1.8.4)
first of all i have the same problem described in
http://www.php.net/bugs.php?id=11096&edit=1
(i resolve it commenting the line).
but now i have some error compiling gdttf.c, for example:
gdttf.c: In function `glyphTest':
gdttf.c:442: `a' undeclared (first use in this function)
gdttf.c:442: parse error before `)'
gdttf.c:443: `b' undeclared (first use in this function)
gdttf.c:443: parse error before `)'
[there are 148 lines of errors]
my configure line is:
./configure --with-mysql=/opt/mysql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.14 --enable-track-vars
--with-gd --with-gd-dir=/usr/local/include --enable-calendar --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib
--with-xpm-dir=/usr/X11R6/lib/ --with-ftp
