I've exactly th esame config here, and I got no problems.
Can you try not to use the --with-jpeg-dir (as I didn't use that in my configure
line).

Can you let us know what this shows:

cd /usr/lib
nm [name of jpeg library.so] | grep jpeg_read_header

Is it possible that you have other version of the libarary on your system perhaps? En
which version of the jpeg library do you have?

Can you add the config.log file to this report?

When trying to compile 4.0.6 with the same configuration as 4.0.5, configure complains
that it can't find libjpeg, although the library files are located in the specified
directory (/usr). This is the output of configure:

checking whether to include PCRE support... yes
checking for memmove... (cached) yes
checking whether to include PDFlib support... yes
checking for the location of libjpeg... yes
checking for jpeg_read_header in -ljpeg... no
configure: error: libjpeg not found!

Here is my command line:

./configure
--with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs
--with-gettext=no
--with-pgsql
--with-msql=/usr/local/Hughes
--with-mnogosearch=/usr/local/mnogosearch
--without-mysql
--without-gd
--with-xml
--with-dom=shared,/usr/local
--with-java=/usr/local/jdk1.2.2
--with-pdflib=/usr/local
--with-pspell
--enable-track-vars=yes
--with-jpeg-dir=/usr
--with-tiff-dir=/usr
--with-zlib-dir=/usr
--with-session=/tmp
--enable-trans-sid
