First noticed in 4.0.3pl. After moving to 4.0.4pl1 seemed to be working ok for 2 weeks. Now found several situations where magic quotes are unstable in MySQL Output. eg $row->string is "\"test\"" can be output'ed with printf as "test" or \"test\" with magic_quotes_runtime set to on.
