Unfortunately the details escape me; this was to fix a libmysql compile bust on OS X. I wanted to have a CXX check, but *requiring* it was accidental. The issue seems to be gone now, so I'm not going to miss the checks. Sorry about the mixup, luckily it seems we only got a single end-user bug report about this.
