You are right. I wrote that official statement.
These build fixes were based on Sascha's new build
system, so they couldn't be easily backported to 4.2.0.

Additionally, we wanted to be able to announce a point
where Mac OS X would *really* be supported by us,
meaning feature parity with other platforms. In addition
to the build, the biggest obstacle has been the lack
of dynamic PHP extension support on Mac OS X. This has
been implemented in 4.3.0, but requires a corresponding
change in Apache which only went into the Apache 1.3
and 2.0 CVS trees earlier today.

So, the official line is that 4.3.0 will be the first
supported PHP release on Mac OS X and that the release
process of it will start soon. We will release a preview
version of it for Mac OS X as soon as Apple includes
the new Apache version in a future release of Mac OS X.

I hope for a little more patience with this.
We're almost there.
