Ok then, Thanks everyone. I think I'll go ahead and try to hack at this
rather than having to support several sundry versions of tools. My system
has other needs that preclude falling back to autoconf 2.13 or gcc 2.95.
MySQL, Apache, and other packages were built with no problem under my
configuration.

I realize that I might be opening the proverbial can. I'll see how it goes.
Is this the only thing that is broken, or are there some less obvious
problems stemming from my system configuration?
