I'm rather new to this list though, I agree with you, actually too few information about the extension is provided, especially about what mbstring developers(including me) have done, and are doing. The reasoning to consider a extension as a part of core, is prone to be obscure. It's interesting what would happen if mysql extension turned out to be harmful.
