Hey folks! It's come to my attention that trying to help the situation over here at the FIG is a terrible idea. Not only can my blood pressure not handle it, but I am consistently amazed by the dedication of some members of this group to set this entire thing on fire.
The FIG is currently a tiny group of people spending an inordinate amount of time setting garbage fires. When a bunch of current/ex members/contributors called the fire brigade, *not only* were they accused of conspiring against the pyromaniacs, anyone who said "I am sick of this, why does everything have to be on fire" was accused of creating drama. Those people were told that the garbage fires were fine and people suggested if they don't like having their clothes catch fire whilst contributing to a volunteer project, they should just toughen up. Now we have a vote in which you're electing the main fire starter as a bloody fire marshall. The FIG was amazing once, and maybe it can get back there if you all really try. You've lost Guzzle, Laravel, Propel, the League, phpDoc. Of the projects that remain, many (not all) of the representatives have changed from active community leaders, to more "stewardly" roles, where the folks turn up to sometimes cast a vote and wander off again. If these people cannot increase their contributions, if fresh blood cannot be found, and if a more useful approach to making things happen in the FIG, you're at best going to be a stagnant. At worst you'll just be internals, where the loudest and most forceful people get to decide what happens, and everyone else just thinks "f-that". You've already lost the respect of a huge amount of the PHP community, and nothing short of major change can bring it back. Blaming the people that are pointing out these problems is not the way to go. I would urge any voting members to read this article <http://paul-m-jones.com/archives/6379>, and consider if this is somebody you want to help handle moderation and admin tasks while the FIG works out this new future. I'm out of here. Best of luck. See you at the next conference.
