Hi,
I'm about to add some simple calendar functions to my application, and
I'm thinking of how I should implement recurring events. Are there one
standard way most people use that works well? I guess you have some kind
of emitter event that creates the recurring events and a group id that
holds the events together. How long forward does one usually create the
events. Two-three years...?
Sorry if I'm a bit blury. But any ideas on recurring events are welcome.
I guess I could just hack something together, but it would be fun to do
it right.
Regards Emil

If you're on Unix you will need a cron job that runs every x minutes.
That could check a database for jobs/tasks that need running, using the
current time and an option like "run this job every 10 minutes" to
determine what needs running, (ie in that case if the current time isn't
divisible by ten then don't run it).

On what operating system are you trying to install PHP?
Is this coming from ./configure or are you receiving mail from the
PHP-QA list for some reason?
In order to get any real help, please try to be as detailed as
possible when asking a question.

So after ./configure finished, it didn't end with a line beginning like so?
configure: error: [SOME_ERROR_MESSAGE]
If not, feel free to run both 'make' and 'make install'.

Yeah, with those, it's *generally* okay to ignore them.
Feel free to continue the build. If anything seriously hindering

Well, I don't know in your country, but here code is considered, legally
speaking, literature... that means.... we're actually doing ART!!!!
So fractalism is quite appropiate.
Even more, considering that fractal are a mathematical and algorithmical
constructs, it's more pertinent to talk about fractalism in terms of code
writing.

Is there a calculation function?
I'm using an e-commerce shopping cart. I want to tweak the code. The
author is using a varchar(100) field to store prices.
Taking advantage of there being a varchar, instead of entering a price,
I would like to enter a calculation.
(24*2.2)+(24*2.2*.1) 24 is my unit price in British pounds. 2.2 is the
exchange rate into Canadian dollars. etc.
The exchange rate changes frequently. Instead of recalculating and
entering a new price every few days, it would be useful to enter a
calculation in any price field.
I had a look at: http://ca3.php.net/manual-lookup.php?pattern=calc
http://ca3.php.net/manual-lookup.php?pattern=calculate
http://ca3.php.net/manual-lookup.php?pattern=calculation
but I see no function, although I'm sure there is one.
So how could I do this?
$price = (24*2.2)+(24*2.2*.1);
if $price is not an integer, verify if it is a calculation. If so, give
me an integer and round it off to two decimal points:
$price = 58.08;
Do-able?

I think you may have wanted to have that first line enclosed with quotes.
And have it act/look like you took it from the DB. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Should it not be..
$price[] = '(24*2.2)+(24*2.2*.1)';
Other wise, the amount is being evaluated when you assign it to the array.

John,
Technically, yes you can do it. eval() will work, as Richard
mentioned. However, your question involves two things that I prefer to
avoid at all costs. The first is storing numeric data in a varchar
field. I'm not sure why the author chose this approach. A varchar(100)
is reserving storage space for 100 characters. I doubt you're selling
any items that require that number of digits, so it's wasted space.
(It also makes queries like this "SELECT * FROM `items` WHERE `price`
> 100" problematic because the comparison is being done
alphanumerically rather than just numerically.) Price is a number,
regardless of the units -- even cats or canaries -- and is nearly
always handled better as such.
The second item I like to avoid is anything like that evalutates a
string of text as code like eval(), because you have to handle a wide
range of potential errors in the string being evaluated as well as the
potential security risk.
If you're just wanting to convert prices from one currency to another,
isn't the formula the same regardless of the currency? Could you not
store all your prices numerically in a single currency and then
convert the price to any other currency by passing the stored price
and the exchange rate into a function?
function exchangeCurrency($amount, $exchange_rate) {
return $amount * $exchange_rate;
}

There really shouldn't be a debate on which is more accurate, because
that's easily enough to determine.
One can argue if it makes a difference, or doing it more correctly
takes too much time, or other such considerations, but "how accurate"
is usually determined as the least amount of error produced by a
given calculation method.

Which is more accurate? Neither - they're both wrong. :-P
Uh oh. I may have ignited what I wanted to avoid. Seriously, though,
you're probably right. I can't find the thread now, but I seem to
recall that the bulk of the discussion centered around someone on the
list arguing that the difference between each method was so small that
the benefit was negligible, especially compared to the overhead of
using a custom function in SQL Server to do what the client asked (to
use banker's rounding) versus using the native ROUND function. After
all, clients can be so irritating when they expect you to build a
system the way they want it. :-)

How can I get unbanned? I'm not a problem in the least bit and when I can
legitimately answer somebody else's question, I always do.

Hmm, suspicious at best. I find it difficult to believe there are any
obnoxious PHP people. :)

hi brenden...
php/irc is a private/public place. the moderator(s) can pretty much do what
they please.
you're always free to start your own irc channel, and to then moderate as
you see fit!!

It seems to me... And this is just my unimportant opinion....
But...
Your initial question was a violation of the RTFM and STFW tenets... Both
would have provided you answers to such a basic question rather quickly..
Then when wolfpaws provided you more information (print_r added to your
google search provides the answer in the second listing) you again violated
the above tenets. (second strike if you will )
Then when you were finally spoonfed an answer that you should have known
before ever even starting your first session in PHP... You thanked wolfpaws
by telling him he was obnoxious... (third strike and your banned)...
Again, I am not a member of #php or any irc channel for that matter, and I
have no idea who this wolfpaws is, but his actions seem justified to me...
And that is just from hearing your side of the story ...
Lastly, you said :
> I hope this is the right place to ask because I simply can't find any place

No, I do not believe that this is the right to ask this question, since it
has nothing to do with PHP, and apparently the moderator of said IRC channel
is not here...
Remember, when coding, php.net and google are friends. Everyone else hates
you. It is not personal, it's just a fact.

Hey Stephen..
gotta kind of agree with you about the friends aspect of the net!!! i've
often thought that there's a business to be had, by actually setting up irc
channels/forums/threads where you have people pay some small amount to
actually be able to be part of a system where you're going to get reasonable
answers to questions...
you minimize the blatant lazy questions, as you've had to pay to belong to
the channel... and at the same time, you can still help people with really
basic questions who really are trying to resolve something, but they simply
need help...
you could probably easily get businesses to sponsor this as well..
peace..

Well, I understand the concept of "I have paid, so I get to ask whatever I
want." and if he indeed did pay for access to that IRC channel, then he
should strive to get his money back for being banned.
However, paid or not, I subscribe to the "give a man a fish or teach a man
how to fish" philosophy, and answering lazy questions breeds lazy
programmers, which in the end hurts us all.
Part of this job is learning how to learn, and so many times people just
want you to write the code for them.

Also, keep in mind that the effected ban was by regexp'ed name
only in this particular case.

they feel did the disrespecting. At least no one is calling for the death

SUre, considering he only regexed the ID, though it would require
1) realizing it was a regex
2) being able to read the regex
3) going into the #php channel and not ask RTFM or STFW questions
And no, I am not on IRC nor am I wolfpaws

Hi all,
It may not be a php question, but I want to get the filename lists that a
.tar.gz file contains and give it to an array.
How can I manage that?
Thank you very much for your consideration.
