What about just forcing the use of escaped quotes? Have you tried that?

instead of:
echo "    document.write(\"<td><input type=text size=9 value='\" +\n";
try:
echo "    document.write(\"<td><input type=\"text\" size=\"9\" value='\"
+\n";
