if you don't go for fixed widths, yet you want to ensure that the columns do not go 'below' a certain value a neat trick is to create a row (or use an existing row) and populate it with blank gifs - one in each column and each one the 'minimum' desired width of its respective column.(with a height of, say, 1 pixel)
