Alternately, you could place code similar to this in your first form.

if ( isset($_POST['data']) ) {

}

When you first access this form it would output:
<input type="test" name="data" />
And when returning, assuming that your edit button is on a form posting
the data:
<input type="text" name="data" value="Some Data..." />
