Your Linux server probably has error_reporting set to 0, which is usually a good idea for production environments. To supress the error messages without modifying your php.ini, do error_reporting(0). Take a look in your php.ini file- the error_reporting directive will have lots of comments around it explaining the concept thoroughly.
