Check out patUser at http://www.php-tools.de/. There is also a three part tutorial for it over at http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP. I plan to test it soon, but haven't come around to it yet. I'm looking for this kind of stuff myself too. patUser seems to have what I want, except from one important thing - it only seems to be able to protect content, not directories or single pages.
