Solved this, took your advise and avoided regex as its an overkill.
Case you're interested:
$th_var="98797-234234--2c-something-2c";
$piece = explode("--2", $th_var);
echo $piece[0];
(and if i want to use the second "part"... $piece[1] )
Thanks to everyone who gave me examples, links and suggested alternatives
like explode(),
but personally I thought explode too was a regex..:-(.
