This is a bit kludgy, but should work:
function showvar($varname) {
if (!isset($GLOBALS[$varname])) { return; }
echo "Now showing: $varname\n";
echo "Value: ".$GLOBALS[$varname]."\n";
}
$s1 = "Hello World";
showvar('s1');
