May be you can try (string)$string or (int)$string (seemed a little
strange).

Careful... notice the differenec b/n == and ===....

<?php
   $s = 0;
   if ($s == '') {
     print("==\n");
   }

   if ($s === '') {
     print("===\n");
   }
?>

% php foo.php
==
%
