The .php3 extension was more of a pain in the ass than it saved... It was also possible to compile PHP3 and PHP4 in the same Apache - I do not think you can do that with 4/5. However, Rasmus posted a lovely explanation in this forum for EXACTLY how to have both 4 & 5 running on the same box. Search for "Rasmus Lerdorf" and "proxy server" and it should come up.
