Alway throw an error when in question
if(!($result = mysql_query($query, $connection))){
echo mysql_error() . "<br>\n";
exit();
}
My bet is that you need to concatenate
$query = "SELECT title FROM " . $cat . " WHERE id = '". $id ."' ";
