Last I checked, you pretty much HAD to use it for pg_fetch_row() since it does an E_NOTICE when you try to fetch a row beyind the number available... You could use pg_num_rows() but that was slower, since the number of rows would not necassarily be readily available, as I understand it. Never did understand why that would do that.
