I *believe* the current state of the art on this stands as follows: GD now supports animated GIFs. PHP does not (yet) have the GD functions in its GD extension. So your two simplest options I can see are: #1. Add the GD animated GIF functions to PHP source and submit it as a patch. #2. Create the individual frames in GD, and then use http://php.net/exec with ImageMagick (or similar) to composit the individual frames into a single animated GIF.
