I contest that contention!  An abbreviation including the final letter of the 
original word doesn't need the full stop, and so vs is correct (or so I was 
taught).  (The Oxford English Dictionary apparently agrees -- see 
http://www.askoxford.com/results/?view=dev_dict&field-12668446=vs&branch=13842570&textsearchtype=exact&sortorder=score%2Cname,
 and compare vs, say, 
http://www.askoxford.com/results/?view=dev_dict&field-12668446=sept&branch=13842570&textsearchtype=exact&sortorder=score%2Cname!)

Invalid use of either "sentence" or "redundant". (The sentence would be 
tautological; redundant, the phrase).
