Those are not comas, or even commas, but parentheses.
Parentheses have a specific meaning in PCRE.

If you want a literal parenthesis in your pattern, you need to escape it.
Try this:
preg_match('|^(.*)\\((.*)\\)$', $string, $parts);
echo "<pre>"; var_dump($parts); echo "</pre>";
