The kind of opposite of this, is what I use, in that it ADDs the () and -
if ((strlen($phone)) <= 14) $phone =
preg_replace("/[^0-9]*([0-9]{3})[^0-9]*([0-9]{3})[^0-9]*([0-9]{4}).*/",
"(\\1) \\2-\\3", $phone);
