To avoid confusion, rather than something like
"$1{$id}$3"
Which looks really indecipherable, I'd definitely think something like
'$1' . $id . '$3'
is a lot easier to read and understand what's going on by immediately
looking at it.
As an added bonus, it'll definitely work ;)
