You're trying to open PHP tags within a PHP code block. Drop the
nested <?php echo $subject; ?> and replace it with:
'.$subject.'
Thus:
echo '<br/><br/>
<form method="post" action="sendmail.php">
<label for="subject">Subject of email </label><br/>
<input id="subject" name="subject" type="text"
value="'.$subject.'"><br/>
