Am partially successfull after taking a further look into things.  the following
(while ugnly) correctly catches everything except the \ character for some
reason.  ideas?

if(preg_match("/['".'" ,!@#$%\^&*()+=\/\\:;?|]/',$MyString)){
        # echo error, character found

Will likely switch to that syntax for brevity sake.
