Not quite your thing, but I'm sticking the school's timetable on a server so that anyone can call up their lesson timetable and also find out teacher's timetables and whether or not classrooms are free. The only way I found I could do this was in MySQL and although I dont know of any projects, I think this is the kind of structure you would be after.
