The flexibility of the dynamic module is great. I recommend it. I haven't discovered an major advantages of the static modul myself, although I know they've got to exist (either that or it's just a remnant of previous versions, there for those who are afraid of change :) ). Compile Apache alone and then do the dynamic module, there are also fewer steps in doing so.
