Not all browsers will support this, of course. But, then, even fewer browsers will support the use of CSS for the same application. You can also use: <td bgcolor="#ffffff"> to make the background color white, again avoiding the use of CSS. Both, I believe, will pass as valid HTML 4.01 and XHTML transitional 1.01.
