The Zend Studio comes with both a local debugger (for convenient local-machine / offline debugging) as well as remote server debugger (for 'the real deal').
If you work with the local debugger, the local version of php is used, which includes core php, but not any extensions. The function mssql_connect() is not a core php function, so the local debugger doesn't recognize it. All you have to do is use the server debugger, where you have all the php extension modules actually installed.
