I am admittedly no pundit (or I wouldn't need to read this list), but
utf-8 is working for me just fine in SuSE 9.1 as well as in Windows-XP
and MacOSX. Data entry and retrieval on all three platforms is fault
free, but of course you have to explicitly set utf-8 encoding in any
web pages where users enter data.
