I don't think that can be right. I have a standard RH7.2 box that I
installed OpenLDAP on after PHP was configured and I was able to query
my LDAP database.
I think as long as PHP has --with-ldap you should be good.

You will need OpenLdap installed on the server so PHP can use the LDAP
libraries that come with it. You can still connect to another server, but
you'll need the libraries on the server that PHP is running on.
Thanks to Micheal Mays for clearing this one up for me. We had this
discussion a couple months ago....off list, so i thought i send it along.

Thanks for that. Therefore, if I install OpenLDAP (and the it's
prerequisites), then install PHP --with-ldap it will work. Afterwards
I can delete the OpenLDAP install as long I keep the libraries - yes??

I stand corrected. In my scenario the LDAP server and the Web Server
were on the same box...

We tried to install php 4.1.1 on our Solaris 2.8 machine with gcc 2.95.2 and
apache 1.3.22. We tried to enable as many configuration options as possible.
It configured OK, but we encountered several error messages during compilation:
We configured with option "--enable-dmalloc" and "--with-apxs", the error
messages we got are:

When we built apache, there is no options for "dmalloc", does that mean we
could not enable dmalloc in php too?

We tried to build php 4.1.1 with as many options as possible on our Solaris 2.8
machine with gcc 2.95.2 and Apache 1.3.22. During the compilation, we had
a problem with wddx extention which complains that header file "expat.h" is
not in the expat 1.2 package that we installed for php. Thanks to Rasmus, we
now know that we can leave off the "--with-expat-dir" switch completely,
since php already comes with its own expat. We are wondering, are there
other packages like expat that php already has its own copy of them, for example,
snmp, yaz, pspell or mnogosearch?
We got the following error message during the compilation:
ld: fatal: symbol `odr_bool' is multiply-defined:
(file Zend/.libs/libZend.al(odr_bool.o) and file
/depot/package/yaz_1.8.4/vendor/lib/libyaz.a(odr_bool.o));

(file Zend/.libs/libZend.al(sql.o) and file
/depot/package/mnogosearch_3.1.19/vendor/lib/libudmsearch.a(sql.o));
Is that problem similar to expat which php has its own copy or because of
other things that we overlook?
Thanks,
Ziying Sherwin

Just use the zip version - You don't really need the installer.
You'll need to check up the manual installation docs, but their pretty
simple

Hi:
I'm lost. My scenario is the next:
One Linux box running Red Hat 7.2 with all updates applied across
Ximian Red Carpet. In other machine one Oracle database 8.x up and running.
I've installed the Oracle 8.1.7 client after some problems with the link
process ( solved ). All users in the Linux box can execute the oracle tools
( sql, oem,etc...) without problems. Now i wanna install the Apache server
and PHP with oci funcionality . I tried to install both across the sources
rpms, touching the build section of the spec files. With Apache all goes
well, I can compile and install the rpm usin an rpm -bb apache.spec. But
for the php this not work :( I'm only including the line
--with-oci8=/path_to_oracle_lib in the spec file and the rest of the
options of the configure line are the same, except the oci8, of course),
but when i try to compile it with the rpm -bb php.spec, in the make process
i get the error "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lclntsh". The file exists ( is a
link to the libclntsh.so.8.0 ). The Oracle lib directory is defined and
cache by ldconfig. The oracle lib path is defined in the PATH environment
var. I don't know why i'm getting this error :(. Any help will be very,
very, very apreciated!!!
TIA and regards

Thomas,
Apache 2.0.28 beta is exactly that...a beta. At least thats what I'm
leaning towards. I have a Win2K machine running Apache 1.3.23, MySql
3.23.47, and PHP4.1.1 and it works fine. However, on my laptop I decided to
try Apache 2.0.28 with the others and PHP4.1.1 ain't working for me. I've
tried everything....Apache 2.0.28 works fine without PHP4, but as soon as I
try to add it, Apache won't restart.
Has anyone gotten Apache 2.0.28 and PHP4.1.1 to work on a Win32 based
system??

Did you copy php4ts.dll to C:\WINNT\system32? This seems to be the root of
most PHP installation problems on Win32 systems.

Hello. I had a brutal time figuring out how to get these three to work
together, so I thought I should post the solution that worked for me.
pdflib:
1. unpack the tarball
2. setenv LDFLAGS '-flat_namespace' # I don't know if this was entirely
necessary
3. ./configure \
--enable-shared \
--enable-static \
--with-java=no \
--with-perl=/usr/bin/perl \
--enable-php
4. edit libtool, find the line beginning with archive_cmds='$CC ...',
and add ' -flat_namespace ' after the 'CC'
5. make
6. sudo make install
7. delete (or move somewhere else) the file libpdf.dylib from
/usr/local/lib and the symlink in /usr/lib, this is to force php to link
against pdflib statically.
php
1. unpack the tarball
2. setenv LDFLAGS '-flat_namespace'
3. ./configure \
--with-xml \
--with-zlib \
--with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs \
--enable-trans-sid \
--with-pdflib=/usr/local \
--enable-shared \
--with-mysql=/usr/local \
--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local \
--with-zlib-dir=/usr \
--with-tiff-dir=/usr/local \
--with-png-dir=/usr/local
4. edit libtool, add '-flat_namespace' to the archive_cmds line as above
for pdflib
5. make
6. make install
####
Of course configurations will vary, but the key elements for me were
adding the -flat_namespace flag to libtool, and deleting the
libpdf.dylib library before configuring php.
Hope someone finds this helpful.
-Steve

Hi All,
I'm using php 4.1.1 with linux Mandrake 8.1
Out of the box everything works great.
I want to rebuild php so I can get the DBG debugger to work with it
followed these instructions
download latest PHP sources (4.0.5 or higher) and unpack them.
download DBG sources, unpack them and copy dbg directory into the ext
subdirectory of the PHP directory tree.
read carefully INSTALL file bundled with PHP.
make sure you have autoconf 2.13 or newer, automake 1.4 or newer and
libtool 1.3.3 or newer
delete configure shell script bundled with the PHP sources. Note:
Failing to do this will result in missing dbg.so after php compiling.
detele config.cache file.
run ./buildconf. After a while, the configure script should be
generated.
from this point onwards, installation is similar to the installation of
one of the official packages
run ./configure shell script with:
--enable-dbg=shared argument for dbg support.
--with-dbg-profiler argument for dbg-profiler support.
for example:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-mysql
--enable-dbg=shared --with-dbg-profiler
run make and then make install. Finally, dbg.so shared library should be
generated.
After running make install I expected libphp4.so in
/usr/lib/apache-extramodules to be a new file but it wasn't
by watching the screen during the install i figured out several files
were being generated in /usr/local/bin
php, php-conf, phpize, phptar
I don't get it, I thought this would build a dynamic library
Can somebody straighten me out??
Thanks
Dave
