I was able to find the answer to my problem on the openldap website. I am posting the answer here for future reference.
In the file src/Configuration.tmpl change the values to: EXTRA_LDFLAGS=-L/u01/app/openldap-2.0.21/libraries EXTRA_LIBS=-lldap -llber EXTRA_INCLUDES=-I/u01/app/openldap-2.0.21/include The path /u01/app is the location I extracted the source files for openldap.
