For giggles I decided to try your method, but removed pdflib & informix, and
replaced the --with-apache to --with-apxs2.
Paul, you are compiling what version of apache?
I used this configure:
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs \
--without-mysql \
--with-gd \
--enable-gd-native-ttf \
--with-freetype-dir=/usr \
--with-zlib \
--with-config-file-path=/etc \
--with-ncurses \
--enable-exif \
--enable-ftp \
--with-xml \
--enable-track-vars \
--enable-trans-sid
