Perhaps I can help with this one...  We have the same configuration you
report - working with no trouble.  This is:

Solaris 9 (SPARC)
Apache 2.0.44
PHP-4.3.0-dev (snapshot from late January)

We ALSO were having trouble with the AddType approach; We commented out the
respective php 'AddType' lines...  But the following works:

<Files *.php>
    SetOutputFilter PHP
    SetInputFilter PHP
</Files>

Let me know how this works!
