What would you suggest is a better database and why?
Personally I run Firebird and have run versions of it since before MySQL came into existence. It is stable, fast and expandable, and already provides most the the facilities currently planned to be added in the next few versions of MySQL. Backup can be run on a live database and will produce an accurate snapshot, but restore is rairly needed with correctly set up systems. Firebird has no licensing restrictions, so there is no need to worry if any implementation will incurer licence fees. It runs on several OS's out of the box, and currently a rebuild for 64bit OS's is underway, maintaining compatibility with the 32bit databases.
Interfaces to most development frameworks and support by many third party tools complete the picture.
