[PHP-INSTALL] installing php

hi, i seem to be getting a problem when i try to configure php with 
linux red hat 8, apache 1.3.31 and mysql 4.0.20 i get the error:
configure:  error: libpng.(a|so) not found
what is this error and how do i fix it??
any help apreciated
