In case anyone else has this problem, here is the answer. We had an
old version of libxml2 installed on the system because we had installed
gCvs, which has its own libxml2 library. We fixed it by editing
"/etc/ld.so.conf" and removing the line "/usr/local/ActiveTcl/lib".
Then we ran ldconfig again (you could also just reboot), and the error
message went away.
