Thanks Patrick, now I understand.

Another question:
I can't find a tmp directory on my shared server, there must be one somewhere. 
I'm assuming it's just below the root as in my local setup. I can hear you say, 
ask your systems admin but if you've got a cheap site, you tend to get cheap 
sarcastic replies.

If I use one of my own directories, it would need to be cleared eventually. I'm 
assuming the tmp directory once full, will just overwrite old stuff, so that 
would be better.

If I try to write below the root, will this cause any bother. I've just heard 
about someone's site being removed without refund, for something they did wrong.
