It sounds as though your dates are not in the same format.
What about
$current = date("Y-n-j");
echo "<P>:$current:".$audio["release_dt"].'</P>';
What do you get.
And you do know that you have 2 different variable names, don't you?
> $audio["release_dt"]
>$audio["rel_date"]
