Printing is a browser action--not a server-side one. PHP runs on the server.
To access any ability to print you need to use a client-side language like
Javascript.

The suggestion for CSS is pretty close. You can set up separate style sheets
for print and screen displays. The print CSS can have several id elements with
a display: none property along with appropriate fonts and colors.

Ultimately, while interesting, it is not a PHP topic except on a peripheral
basis.
