The xampp (Apache MySQL PHP Perl for several operating systems, hence "x")
package looks pretty good and I recommend it to my students who wish to run PHP
and MySQL on a Windows machine.

Normally I suggest to my students that they take an old low-power computer such
as a Pentium I 100MHz with 64M RAM and a 6-10G HD and dedicate it to Linux.
This sort of computer won't run modern Windows systems and people are literally
giving them away. If you have an Ethernet card which works with Linux, you can
plug it in to your network and run it headless (without a monitor or keyboard)
and connect to it from other computers which share your router/switch.

I will be installing PHP & MySQL on my iBook laptop. When it came back from a
repair, Apple wiped the hard drive. Normally I use the instructions and links
to software which may be found on http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/
Perhaps I should give xampp for MacOS X a try to see if it works.
