On mine, I have divided them in blocks of 100, based on the number.

When I looked into it, I found that some shared hosting systems limited
the number of files to 1000 or 2000, because it slowed down the server,
and so slowed other clients on the same shared hosting. On a dedicated
server, this limit is not applied. I worked on the principal that if it
slowed down the server, then I wouldn't do it, even though I could. But
I never tried it.
