I would suggest to Jeni that you just download the PHP manual and play with it.

Books get outdated very fast.

    Subject: hi, book question

Hi all, I'm so glad to have found this list! so far I only know how to
include with PHP and I know it can be used to set a cookie (though I
haven't
a clue how to go about it)...that's about it. I really want to learn more
but I feel completely out of my depth here. I've taught myself HTML and
CSS
over the years but this feels so different...

Anyway, I'm headed to the book store today and was hoping to get
suggestions
for books. What's the number one book you would recommend to a PHP newbie?
I tend to learn best by having examples I can take apart, with some
explanations about what different commands (is that the right term, even?)
    mean. Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Jeni
