Depending on which OS you use, pick a good text editor. I personally
use and recommend EditPlus on the PC and BBEdit on the Mac, but ask 100
coders what they prefer and recommend and you'll get 100 different
answers. Play with a few different ones and settle on the one you like
that works the way you want it to.
Then, get some books. I personally started out with "PHP for the
Worldwide Web - Visual Quickstart Guide" (Peachpit Press), but again,
there are hundreds of PHP books out there. Flip through a few, find one
that teaches you the basics, and start at square one. You'll no doubt
get a few other recommendations from other people on this list of books
that they liked.
Finally, ask questions. That's what this group is for.
