Thank you Patrick for your reply .. now I know it cant
be done using PHP. It seems daft that they couldnt
have added something to the BROWSE button so that when
users select the file(s) they want to upload the form
automatically reads the sizes as well. I cant see any
beach of security in that. Nevermind .. that is the
way it is . I will find a java applet instead :)

answer: no way
tell the user the upload limit MAX_UPLOAD_SIZE
if they are too stupid to read it is not your fault.

you could try to write a java applet for upload
which might be able to check before upload.
accessing files on the client is forbitten in php
because of security reasons.
