It depends on how you like to work. For me, I needed syntax highlighting,
integrated debugging, code folding or a code explorer window, a powerful
search and replace, and side-by-side file comparison.

I chose PSPad.  It has:
* excellent syntax highlighting
* an integrated debugger, though I wish I could dock it (like in PHP
Designer)
* code explorer
* search and replace across multiple files with support for regular
expressions, though I wish I could dock it too (like in EditPad)
* awesome side-by-side file comparison

PHP Designer is a really awesome program... or it would be if it wasn't so
buggy. It had a cool feature that allowed to highlight some text in your
file, and if it's a PHP function you can right-click and look it up in the
PHP manual. I used that feature all the time. However, I got tired of the
program because it took up too much of my resources and took forever to open
and close. This program has the best debugger I've used... when it works.

Crimson Editor is very very lightweight. It's great if all you really need
is syntax highlighting. It hasn't been updated and no one has heard from
the developer in over a year though.

EditPad is really good, too... I don't know how I've managed without their
search and replace function. I sure miss it, but I didn't want to pay for
the version that has all the other features I need.
