It could conceivably work that way, except that the entire catalog is
dynamically generated from the DB, from the main categories to the
subcats in each main cat, right down to the products found in each
subcat.

So, if I were manually coding it, I could do it that way. But even your
way, I'd need to figure out a way to match the link subcat to one or
more listed in the product's SUBCAT field.

At this point, the best way I can think of to figure it out would be to
first pull all the products whose SUBCAT field contained \n's (since
that's the delimiter), use PHP to create an array of the field, and
match the link subcat using in_array() ... unless anyone here can think
of anything better?
